Here in my country, we celebrate “Día de Los Muertos”, also known as the Day of the Dead. But don’t let the name fool you! It’s not a spooky celebration, rather, it is a day to remember those we love but are no longer with us.
Sugar skulls are icons of this day because they represent both death and the sweetness of life. That’s why we decided to make these cute bookmarks to celebrate this day.
You can also make them with your kids to talk about traditions in other countries. Or make them as a fun and easy classroom project.
Scroll to the end of this post to get the printable templates. There are 2 versions available: full color and black and white. You can pick the one that fits your group better and have fun making these skulls.
Ready to fold these bookmarks?
Let me show you how!
How to Make a Sugar Skull Bookmark
To make these Day of the dead bookmarks, your kids need to be able to cut and fold.
If they are young children, you can help them with the cutting and let them do the rest. The folding doesn’t need to be exact on these bookmarks.
Here you can find a list of the materials we used and the instructions we followed to make these bookmarks. I promise they are very simple!
And there is also a video tutorial in case you prefer to watch it.
Materials
Making these sugar skull bookmarks only requires:
- Regular white paper
- Printer
- Scissors
- Glue
- Sugar Skull Bookmark Template (available here!!)
Instructions
- Start by printing and cutting the skull bookmark template.
- Fold along the purple line to make a triangle. Make sure to keep the sugar skull on top.
- Flip over your triangle and fold the top layer down to create a pocket.
- Fold the left side of the triangle up.
- Repeat with the right side.
- Insert each side into the pocket and crease well.
- Flip the bookmark over to see the skull and cut out the white parts.
Skeletastic! Your sugar skull bookmark is completed.
